Overview
On July 8, 2025, the Ojai City Council unanimously passed the Ojai C.A.R.E. Community Autonomy, Rights, and Equality policy: an affirmation of the city’s core values of compassion, equity and community responsibility.
The new policy, introduced by Mayor Pro Tem Rachel Lang and Council Member Leslie Rule, establishes city protocols for navigating changes in federal administration policies, particularly those related to immigration and healthcare.

Know Your Rights
California law provides protections for all residents, regardless of your immigration status. Here are your fundamental rights:
If arrested by police or detained by ICE, you have the right to seek legal assistance through an attorney.
State and local law enforcement are not permitted to ask for your immigration status or share your personal information for immigration purposes.
Local law enforcement are not permitted to assist ICE with immigration enforcement, with very limited exceptions.
You have the right to apply for housing without sharing your immigration status. Housing providers cannot harass or intimidate you by threatening to share information about your status with ICE or other agencies.
Federal laws ensure all people have access to emergency medical care, including undocumented immigrants.

It’s important to be careful who you hire for immigration help. Here are key protection tips:

- Never Give Information Over Phone/Email
Many nonprofit organizations provide free immigration help. Visit lawhelpca.org to find organizations near you.
Keep the original versions of your documents safe. Never give them to anyone unless you see proof the government requires the original.
Only lawyers, accredited representatives and recognized organizations can provide legal advice or represent you in immigration court.
Federal or state agencies will never ask for personal information or payment by phone, email or text.
